Hi All.
A bit of information about the Moel Fferna walk on 24th March.
Though at high level, the walk is relatively easy. The first section is on an easy ridge with extensive views but, in inclement weather, very exposed to the wind, so warm, wind proof clothes are a must at this time of year. We will park at 480 metres (1580 feet) above sea level and the highest point is 630 metres (2080 feet). The full walk is 8 miles with 330 metres / 1000 feet of ascent. An optional cut off reduces the distance to 7 miles with 185 metres / 660 feet of ascent.
The most difficult bit is finding the meeting point at O.S. Grid ref. SJ 148396. From the point at which the road from Ruabon joins the A5 in Llangollen, travel west on the A5 for 4.5 miles to Glyndyfrdwy. As you enter the village (30 mph zone) there is a petrol filling station on the right. Very soon afterwards the A5 curves left and on this bend at Grid ref. SJ 152426 there is an easily missed left turn on to a minor road. St Thomas church is immediately after the turning but not easily seen on the approach. Take the left turn and climb steeply for a short distance through 2 bends amongst dwellings to reach a gate. Pass through the gate and continue on unfenced road climbing 1000 feet in 2.5 miles. Though not coloured yellow on the O.S. map, the road has a good tarmac surface. 300 yards before the tarmac ends there is room to pull off the road on the right.
